Wire.vg was created as a replacement to the RSS reader for gaming. John Kershaw, the guy who started it, wanted a way to collect together all gaming news, but not be overwhelmed by the depressingly low worthwhile-to-worthless ratio you get when you subscribe to multiple RSS feeds. Within a week the site started attracting a lot of interest from people wanting news filtered sensibly, which has become the ultimate goal.

RSS feeds, rather than user-driven submissions, are used for a number of reasons, mainly; 1) No spam and 2) the site updates automatically. The latter is rather obvious, but the former takes years spent on other (perfectly good) social news sites to understand. When anyone can submit news posts to a site you get people who find news, re-write it, then post their own re-write. That's not cool, or good, and Wire.vg hopes to avoid that.

Inevitably there will be people wingeing about how, because we don't let just anyone's stuff end up in our database, and because we use our personal bias of what's good and what's bad when designing we're being all unfair (or evil, or corrupt or blah blah blah). We might be, but we call it something different; using common sense. This website was built out of a problem, and it's building itself into a solution that prefers to use the brain to work out what's stupid, rather than a lot of rules. We happen to think we're doing a damn good job at it.
